Christ Church Shimla
The Victorian-Gothic spire of Christ Church is Shimla's most
prominent landmark. It is one of the second oldest church in
Northern India overlooking the ridge. Christ Church was plated
in copper and the exquisite beauty comes with the stained
glasses fitted on its windows depicting Faith, Hope, Charity,
Fortitude, Patience and Humility.
Jakhu Temple Shimla
The early morning hike up to the Jakhu, or "monkey", temple is
something like a tradition in Shimla. Dedicated to the monkey
god, Jakhu temple stands on the top of the hill (2455m),
offering a panoramic view of the Himalayas. It also offers a
fine view over the surrounding valleys out to the snow capped
peaks and over Shimla itself.
Shimla Museum
Tucked away on the western edge of town, The HP State Museum is
located 2.5 kms west of Scandal point. The museum has a good
collection of Ancient Historical Sculptors and paintings, coins,
photos of Himachal Pradesh. A gallery of magnificent Pahari
miniatures is found on the ground floor. A selection of
Himachal's rich heritage is displayed here.
The Mall Shimla
The hub of the Shimla is The Mall - Main shopping centre of
Shimla with departmental stores, ice-cream parlours, shawl
shops, Gaiety theatres and many more which runs along the Ridge
and is crowded with tourists. Lakkar Bazaar adjacent to the
Ridge is popular for its wood crafts and souvenirs.
Viceregal Lodge Shimla
Viceregal Lodge, also known as "Rashtrapati Nivas" is a
six-storey building surrounded by well-maintained gardens and
Shimla's single most impressive colonial monument located on the
Observatory Hill. Built in the Elizabethan style it has a
crenulated tower and grey limestone and sandstone. It has now
been converted into Institute of Advanced Study.
Tara Devi Shimla
11kms. from the Shimla bus-stand. Tara Devi has a temple
dedicated to the goddess of stars on top of the hill. There is a
military Dairy Town here as well as the headquarters of Bharat
Scouts and Guides. At a height of 6,070 ft. Tara Devi is an
ideal place for a person wanting peace and some rest.
